What AI Effort Settings Change
Choose low, medium, high, or extra-high effort by task and understand the tradeoff.
What AI Effort Settings Change
Spend less time on easy requests and more thinking budget on hard ones.
What this helps you do
Choose an effort level by the job and raise it only when the finished result needs more work.
Before you start
Find the effort or thinking control in your AI app. The available labels depend on the model, product, and plan. Choose one test task you can check.
Terms to know
Effort is a limit on the model’s reasoning work for a response. It is not new knowledge, a live web search, or a promise of accuracy.
Does higher effort improve the answer?
It can improve a hard answer. More reasoning gives the same model room to compare approaches, follow several rules, and check its work. It also takes longer and uses more of your allowance. A simple task may come out just as well at low effort. A hard task can still fail at extra high if the source file or key fact is missing. Judge the finished work with a real check, such as a passing test or a comparison against the source, rather than the thinking timer. See OpenAI's model and effort guide and Claude's effort settings.
Step-by-step
- Start with your model's default effort. You do not need to climb from low through every level for each request.
- Drop to low for a short summary or a tiny code edit. Use medium to compare two plans or build a simple feature.
- Raise to high for a bug that spans several files, a difficult decision, or work with several rules to satisfy.
- If high misses a test or a key requirement, fix the instructions or add the missing context and retry at high. If it still fails, run the same task at extra high. Some Claude models also offer Max for the hardest work.
- Compare the final results. Keep the lower setting when both pass. More effort never replaces a missing file, source check, or test run.

Task: [TASK]. Inputs: [FILES OR FACTS]. Constraints: [RULES]. Success check: [HOW I WILL VERIFY]. Start at this model's default effort. If the result misses the check, identify what failed. Fix the instructions or missing context and retry. Raise effort only if that still fails.Things to know
Higher effort may take longer or use more resources. A weak prompt or missing source can still lead to a weak answer. See Claude’s effort guide for its current labels.
If something goes wrong
If high effort still invents facts, add source material and require citations. If a quick task is slow, lower the setting and simplify the request.
Final check
A pass is picking the lowest setting that completes your test task correctly and clearly.
